Sexually Abused Adolescents in the Juvenile Justice System

Research over the years has confirmed the association between sexual abuse and trauma, non-suicidal self-injury, post-traumatic stress symptoms, and dissociation. When these associations were tested with a sample of adolescents recruited from the juvenile justice system in the USA, the researchers found that sexual abuse predicted post-traumatic stress symptoms and self-injury over and above other forms of traumatic experiences. Youth in the juvenile justice system who experience sexual abuse typically have higher rates of post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSD) (Chaplo et al. 2015). Interventions that treat adolescence trauma among those in the juvenile justice system could reduce the harm and improve the life-course trajectory of those who are sexually abused, as well as those who have survived a life-changing traumatic experience, and as a result suffer from PTSD.
